There are all sorts of great places to go birding along State Road 125 in northern Colorado. The Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge is the most popular viewing area and there are also about a dozen state wildlife areas to be found in this big valley. When zooming in on a map, one will notice several streams, wetlands areas and ponds dotting this high elevation landscape around the towns of Walden and Cowdrey. These lesser known spots can be easily accessed from the roadside. I spent a few weeks doing non-stop wildlife photography in this region and the experience certainly was rewarding!

One of the lesser known marsh ponds that is perfect for a casual birding venture is located in Cowdrey at the intersection of Road W6 and CR 125. Cowdrey is by no means a large town and there are only a few buildings in this area. Behind the buildings to the west is a large marsh pond that attracts dozens of songbird species and migrating waterfowl. Eagles often fish at this spot too and they are usually seen perching in the early morning hours.

For those who are planning a Cowdrey birding venture, Walden is where civilization and modern amenities can be found. This is the moose capitol of the world and these large animals actually can be seen strolling down main street. When the weather warms up, the insects multiply in great numbers, which in turn creates an endless buffet for songbirds. The birding action does get hotter as time progresses through the summer and by August, the bug feeding frenzy reaches a peak. For those who pack a super telephoto lens, the marsh pond by Cowdrey certainly will present an opportunity to capture images to share back home!

*The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
