Smith River National Recreation Area

When touring the northwestern states, it does not take long to realize that the deep National  Forests are the star of the show. Each offers an environment of unique flora and fauna, along with majestic landscapes, while overcrowding is rarely a problem. A National Forest venture will require more gear and some careful planning, which becomes easier to manage after getting some deep woods experience. Soon enough, camping in the deep woods becomes preferred over booking a motel room, especially since most campsites are located near a popular point of interest and there will be no commuting involved. Rolling out of the hammock to get a day of outdoor adventures started is like a dream come true and one of the best places to make this happen is the Smith River National Recreation Area!

National Forest Recreation Areas are nearly always located at a primary attraction and the Smith River in northern California certainly is outdoorsman's paradise. The Smith River region offers a world of adventure, along with plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation. The river runs through the recreation area and a fly fisherman will not have to go too far to land some steelhead, salmon or trout. Splashing in the water or lazing the day away while floating in a rubber inner tube are Smith River pastimes too. This recreation area has hiking trails running through the surrounding mountains that offer good wildflower viewing and birding opportunities, so be sure to pack a camera for the trek.

The best part is the Smith River National Recreation Area has five developed campgrounds that feature facilities, picnic tables and fire rings. Drinking water is also available at some of the campgrounds, which is a real plus when planning an extended stay. Dispersed camping areas and cabin rentals are available too, so any budget can be accommodated. Some campgrounds are in the reservation system, while others are first come-first serve, so even a meandering nomad has a good chance of finding a spot. The Smith River National Recreation Area covers a lot of ground and there is plenty to explore, so stock up the camping gear and chart this deep woods destination on the wish list map!

*The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
