Click this link to view all photos: Bluewater Lake Flicker Album Bluewater Lake State Park is a great spring season destination and this scenic area is easy to access. Historic Route 66, Red Rock Park and the cultural scene in Gallup, New Mexico are practically right next door, while Sky City, El Morro National Monument and El Malpais National Monument are in this neighborhood too. Several weeks can be spent exploring all there is to see and do in this region and Bluewater Lake is the perfect spot for setting up a basecamp. There are several developed campgrounds to choose from in this big state park and some even overlook the picturesque lake from the high ground. Speaking of the high elevations, Blue Water Lake is situated in the Zuni Mountains, so a cool breeze can spell relief even during the summer season. The spring season is a good time to plan a visit to Blue Water Lake State Park, simply because the crisp clean mountain air whispering through the piñon forests is so invigorating. Where there is water, there is wildlife and this lake attracts many migratory bird species. The spring season birding is also excellent in the forests and many unique local species can be spotted in both the grassy meadows and deep woods. The frisky squirrels gathering pine nuts in the deep forests will definitely keep a photographer busy too. Larger animals like deer and elk roam these mountains, while bears and mountain lions also exist in these parts, so it is best to use safe food storage methods and keep children within view. Horseback trail riding is a pastime in this big state park and corrals can be found in the neighboring villages. Basic essentials can be found in the neighboring small towns too, while the nearby cities of Gallup and Grants offer modern amenities. Bluewater Lake is a popular spot for small craft boating and by far, the main attraction is the sport fishing in these waters. This big lake is stocked with rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and catfish, which are all campfire cooking delicacies. Family fishing for sunnies is also great fun, while those who are into challenging sport fishing will be happy to know that Bluewater Lake is a premium spot for tiger muskie angling. If this all sounds like a dream come true, then be sure to chalk an extended stay at Bluewater Lake State Park high on the spring season wish list!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
