Buck Canyon Overlook ~ Canyonlands National Park

The Buck Canyon Overlook is one of many viewpoints on the Island In The Sky high mesa that present breathtaking views of Canyonlands National Park. Each one of these overlooks has its own character and the views of Buck Canyon certainly are unique. This towering perch is located between Mesa Arch and Grand View Point, which is near the south end of this high mesa. The views from the edge of the cliff point straight into the head of Buck Canyon and the entire length of the interior of this deep gorge can be seen. From this high vantage point, it is also easy to notice that this is where the White Rim area begins way down below, which adds an unusual contrast to the lower canyon rims.

There are zillions of bright sunny Canyonlands photos floating around on the internet, while relatively few show inclement weather. Oddly enough, for those who wish for more elbow room when touring this busy National Park, the best time to visit actually is on a rainy day. Not only will there be fewer people braving the weather, but the added benefit is the moisture exposes the deep colors of the red rock canyons. Far more details can be seen on an overcast day and a digital camera  will notice the difference too.

As can be seen in the photos, it does rain in Canyonlands high desert environment, but the good thing is the gray clouds usually only bring intermittent light drizzling showers. In such conditions, packing some rain gear will present the opportunity to find empty parking spaces and enjoy the scenic overlooks with few others around. Light drizzling rain certainly does makes landmarks like Buck Canyon look far more dramatic and inspiration to not call off the trip if  gray skies are in the forecast!
