Buckhorn Wash To I-70 ~ Utah

The Buckhorn Wash is a fascinating destination in the San Rafael Swell region of Utah and there is so much to experience, that planning on an extended stay is best to do. A series of previously published articles describes the points of interest and the Buckhorn Wash camping options, along with the recommended travel route into this destination. Starting a Buckhorn Wash venture at the visitor center near the Wedge Recreation Area is the most fulfilling way to go. From this direction, a Buckhorn Wash Tour will be an easy downhill run all the way to the Swinging Bridge Campground next to the San Rafael River. From here, it is only a short drive south over a smooth dirt road to I-70, but it is best to not be in a hurry, because there are a few captivating points of interest to be discovered in the final leg of the tour.

After breaking camp and hitting the road, be sure to keep the camera handy because the first majestic landmark along the way is Bottleneck Peak, which is one of the most iconic red rock spires in the west. This towering rock spire is very photogenic and the Sid's Mountain Wilderness is well worth exploring on foot. The road soon runs past several more picturesque rock outcrops, buttes and canyons that are mesmerizing to view. The trail then climbs to the high elevation grassy meadows sparsely dotted with juniper and piñon trees where the views extend to the horizon. Tall mesas border the meadows in this unique place, which is known as the Mexican Mountain Wilderness and there are hiking trails worth taking on. From here to the highway, it is literally one colorful red rock peak and sandstone bluff after another, so the final leg of the Buckhorn Wash journey certainly is a feast for the eyes. Wildlife can be spotted in this region in the early morning hours and pronghorn antelope are commonly seen. Wild burros also frequent this area, so be sure to keep the eyes peeled while cruising down the long dusty trail!
