00:15 Calico Ghost Town 06:50 Pioneertown 11:29 Fin The old historic and sometimes haunted ghost towns of the west are popular Halloween destinations. Some of the spooky ghost towns lie in a decomposing state way out in the middle of nowhere and a late night paranormal rendezvous is guaranteed to send shivers up the spine. Exploring a ghostly haunt where tragic events took place and evil supposedly exists may appeal to some, while others will prefer a more light hearted fun filled good time on Halloween. There are ghost towns out west that have been rekindled as primary tourist attractions, complete with restaurants, artisan shops and carnival style attractions. These kinds of ghost towns usually go all out with Halloween decor and the experience compares to a theme park. One such example is Calico Ghost Town, which definitely is a family friendly destination. Calico is an 1890s ghost town that was rekindled by Walter Knott in the 1950s. If the name sounds familiar, the famous Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in southern California should ring a bell. Calico was the inspiration for some of the amusement park rides and the original ghost town near Barstow was for the most part restored to its former glory. The shops, restaurants and entertainment compares to Knott's Berry Farm, so this abandoned old west mining camp definitely is a family friendly destination. Calico is a historic Mojave Desert mining camp like no other and this old ghost town certainly does go full tilt spooky during the month of October!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
