Cottonwood Cove ~ Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is one of the largest parks in the west and because of the moderate winter weather this truly is a prime time destination for snowbirds. There are backcountry destinations in the surrounding mountains that attract 4x4 and hiking adventurists, while those who are partial to aquatic sports are drawn to the two large bodies of water. Lake Mead is located north of Hoover Dam, while Lake Mojave begins where the Colorado River flows just south of this famous landmark. Both of the large man made lakes are popular with the locals and snowbirds, yet because of the extra long shorelines, overcrowding is rarely a problem. There are also several marina resorts to be found in both bordering states that offer modern amenities, which opens the door for a wide range of visitors.

Cottonwood Cove is located just a few miles east of Searchlight, Nevada and this is one of the most popular marina resort areas at Lake Mojave. Las Vegas locals favor this spot as a weekend escape and Cottonwood Cove certainly does attract snowbirds for the winter. The marina is nestled in a beautiful setting surrounded by towering desert mountain peaks between the two widest sections of Lake Mohave, so there is plenty of room for boaters to roam. Cottonwood Cove also features a modern RV park with full hookups, a developed campground and a quaint resort motel, which suits the needs of a wide range of guests. Watercraft rentals are available onsite too, so practically anybody can join in on the fun. Cottonwood Cove is a busy place to be during the cool weather seasons, so it is best to plan ahead and book reservations ahead of time.

There are dozens upon dozens of small hidden coves along the Lake Mojave shoreline, which is like a dream come true for house-boaters. The striped bass fishing is record setting in this deep lake, so be sure to pack the appropriate angling gear. There are several hiking and 4x4 trails in this end of the recreation area, which means even the landlubbers will have plenty to do. On the downside, the Lake Mojave waters contain brain eating amoebas and using nose-ear protection while in the water is suggested. This end of the Mojave Desert is a very unforgiving environment and it is best to be well prepared before heading into the backcountry. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area actually is the most dangerous national park in America and most fatalities occur in the water, so be sure to use life jackets for an aquatic excursion. Other than these common sense disclaimers, Cottonwood Cove is pure fun in the sun and the winter temperatures are bearable, so be sure to chalk this lakeside destination high on the list!
