Just to make it all plain and simple, Curt Gowdy State Park is like a dream come true for anybody that cherishes the thought of spending some quality time in the great outdoors! This big park covers well over 4,000 acres in two counties and there are seven sections that feature distinctly different environments to explore. Curt Gowdy State Park is conveniently located just a few miles off Interstate Highway 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie in southeast Wyoming, so even getting there is guaranteed to be a smooth trip. This sportsman's paradise is situated in the picturesque rolling foothills of the Laramie Mountains and there are three reservoirs stocked with gamefish, which is all the inspiration needed for making the venture happen! Curt Gowdy State Park was originally called Granite State Park when it was established back in 1971 and a short time later is was renamed in honor of the famous sportscaster, Curt Gowdy, who was a true outdoorsman at heart. The old Curt Gowdy weekend fishing shows on national television likely were the main reason for the name change, because the featured angling sites were always in a place that folks back east could only imagine. Curt Gowdy certainly made Wyoming fly fishing world famous and countless outdoorsmen have made the pilgrimage ever since. With seven different environments and three big lakes, this park has plenty to offer and the sheer diversity is guaranteed to please both hard core adventurers or novices alike. Curt Gowdy State Park offers a wide ranging venue of outdoor activities, which include fishing, birding, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, hiking, OHV trail riding and light craft boating. There are also historic sites, ancient petroglyph trails and so many more activities that it is best to just refer to the Curt Gowdy State Park website to see all the options. Everything from archery ranges and museums to children's playgrounds and a performing arts amphitheater can be found in this park, so be sure to pack plenty of gear for the venture. There are over 150 campsites, an RV camper area along with several cabins and yurts, so even the accommodations will please a wide range of personal tastes. All campsites are available by reservation only, which is something to keep in mind when planning the trip. Just like the namesake, Curt Gowdy State Park has become a world famous fishing destination and the anglers are in no hurry to head back home, so planning way ahead definitely is the way to go. This park is so well maintained that it looks like it just opened yesterday and this has a way of setting a good tone for the entire family. There simply is nowhere else out west that compares and all it takes is one look to see why Curt Gowdy State Park is at the top of an outdoor sportsman's list!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
