Shoshone National Forest Road 300 is also called Louis Lake Road and this travel route offers a nice back country tour between Sinks Canyon State Park and the historic South Pass Mining District along Highway 28 in Wyoming. When looking at a map, there are plenty of dots to connect along this touring route, so it is best to just plan on taking it slow and spend some extra time. In fact, there are several campgrounds along NF Road 300, so planning an entire vacation for this end of the Shoshone National Forest is easy to do. A high ground clearance vehicle is best for this lengthy dirt road tour and stocking up heavy on supplies prior to arrival is recommended. After departing Fiddlers Lake when heading south it is just a short drive to the Christine Lake Trailhead and the Little Popo Agie River Campground. These two points of interest definitely offer a deep woods wilderness experience. A few miles further down the dirt road is where Louis Lake can be found, which is yet another recreation area with a developed campground. Louis Lake is a family fun destination that offers, rustic lodges, great fishing and personal watercraft rentals. From Louis Lake onward to the end point at Highway 28, NF Road 300 runs through a high elevation mountain pass that offers majestic views that extend to the horizon. The towering eroded rock outcrops have a dramatic look that inspires landscape artists and large raptors like to perch way up top. The wildlife is all around in this forest, so be sure to keep a camera handy. The downhill run to the highway passes through several picturesque mountain meadow vistas. There are ATV staging areas, horse trailer corrals and dispersed campsites conveniently located next near the paved highway endpoint. Shoshone National Forest Road 300 (Louis Lake Road) definitely is a world of adventure, so be sure to chalk this great escape high on the list!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
