Green River Overlook ~ Canyonlands National Park

Both the Green River Overlook and Upheaval Dome can be found in the southwest end of the Island In The Sky Mesa. The road to this overlook is easy to find and the parking area is ample. This Island In The Sky is the central district in Canyonlands National Park and the views from the rim stretch far into the horizon. The Maze, Needles and Rivers districts can all be seen from viewpoints along the rim. The Green River Overlook offers fantastic views of this namesake river, which looks absolutely surreal in this section of the park!

Every scenic overlook on the Island In The Sky can be experienced in one day and there will still be time leftover for doing a few hiking trails. A solid one day tour is what most visitors do, especially during the busy summer season. The weather can dramatically affect the viewing experience and the crowd size as well. A cloudy overcast day with light misty rain creates unique photo opportunities and there will be more elbow room as well. At the Green River Overlook, a day of dreary gray skies will impart a more ominous prehistoric appearance, which is intriguing to view.
