Hermit Road is open for passenger car traffic during the winter season, from December 1st through March 1st. Visitors can leisurely tour this section of the Grand Canyon and enjoy the scenic overlooks while the weather is cool. The winter season also tends to be less crowded than during summertime, so this is all the inspiration needed for touring this National Park during the off-season! Hermit Road runs seven miles west from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest, which borders on the rim back country. In a previous article, photos of the stretch of Hermit Road from Powell Point to about the halfway mark are featured. Today's article features the scenic overlooks along the second half of the trek. When touring by car, Hermits Rest is as far west as one can go. Even so, there is plenty to see and do along this seven mile long stretch of road. The wildlife is everywhere and the animals seem to stop in their tracks just long enough for an opportunity to take a great photo. This section of the Grand Canyon also is where the condors are likely to be seen, because these gigantic birds tend to shy away from the populated areas. The scenic viewpoints located along the second half of Hermit Road include The Abyss, Monument Creek Vista and Pima Point. All three of these overlooks offer views that extend far into the horizon. During winter, the haze of the summer wildfire season is long gone, so the views are crystal clear. The bright colors of the weathered sandstone seem to be more vivid during winter, so a tour will be like a photographer's dream come true! The weather is the only limiting factor, because a snow storm can cause the Grand Canyon National Park roads to close. For this reason, it is best to check the forecast when planning a winter season Hermit Road day tour. There are plenty of picnic areas along the rim, so be sure to pack a basket for the scenic drive!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
