The Mesa Top Sites date back to the early days of the Mesa Verde civilization and this area is a showcase of developing architectural styles. The remains of the foundation of a small pueblo complex can be found on the ground level and a deep earthen kiva can be found inside a protective tin building. The kiva is a complex hybrid earthen structure that incorporates some unique stone block and mortar features inside the dugout pit. Details also reveal an intriguing furnace duct system that definitely will take some time to figure out. The most fascinating aspect of this ancient structure is the earthen duct work system that goes from the kiva floor up to a stone block and mortar circle on ground level. The upper circle could have been a smoke house for preserving food or it might have been used for any number of healing or ceremonial purposes. The Mesa Top Sites certainly will provide plenty to ponder over for many years to come, so be sure to take the time to do the little tour!
