Flickr album link: Mt Shavano View Just a few miles north of Poncha Springs, Colorado on Highway 285 is where the Droney Gulch State Wildlife Area is located. This unique wildlife area has a roadside picnic site that offers majestic views of Mt Shavano, which is one of Colorado's most famous 14,000 foot tall peaks. Highway 285 is a tourism corridor that goes north to the Rocky Mountain ski resort areas and this cozy spot definitely is a good place to take a break from the road. A lengthy nature trail heads toward the base of the mountain and this is a worthwhile hike for wildlife photographers since herds of deer, pronghorn antelope and elk graze in this area. Landscape artists will love this picnic spot too, since the views of the big mountain are unobstructed. Be sure to fill the picnic basket prior to arrival, because the beautiful views have a way of captivating an audience and hours can be spent taking it all in!
