Flickr album link: Newton Creek Campground The Newton Creek Campground is located in the Shoshone Canyon tourism corridor between Cody, Wyoming and Yellowstone. The big national park is located west and Buffalo Bill State Park is due east, so this is a convenient spot for setting up a basecamp. The Shoshone River flows right next door through the length of this majestic canyon and this river definitely presents some world class fly fishing opportunities. In fact, the trout angling is the main reason why most visitors choose the Newton Creek Campground and as a bonus, there are several unique points of interest nearby, which include the Holy City, a natural arch, Mummy Cave and the Firefighters Memorial. The setting of the Newton Creek Campground is rustic and there is plenty of green growth, which helps to maintain privacy between campsites. There are 31 campsites available with basic facilities and drinking water onsite. This is a first come-first serve campground, but because of the rustic nature there are usually a few spots open. Avid fishermen that wish to max out the stay will be happy to know that there is a 16 day limit. There is a downside to the Newton Creek Campground that has to do with grizzly bear danger. Because the grizzly bears frequent this riverside campground, only hard sided campers are allowed onsite. No tent camping or sleeping under the stars is allowed, because of the big brown bears. This is a place where bear safe food storage rules are enforced and since visibility is limited because of the young trees, it is best to be well aware of the surroundings. This is especially true when cleaning fish for dinner, which should be done far away from the campsite. Other than the grizzlies, Newton Creek is a peaceful fly fishing retreat, so be sure to chalk this adventurous spot high on the list!

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
