Pueblo Del Arroyo ~ Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Pueblo Del Arroyo is one of several ancient great house pueblos located in an area that is often referred to as being "Downtown Chaco." Pueblo Bonito is right next door and this massive complex is often referred to as being the cornerstone of the downtown area. Pueblo Del Arroyo does differ from the rest, because this is the only structure that faces south. This unique great house is also located on the low ground in the valley, which is composed of loose sediment that is subject to floodwater erosion. Pueblo Del Arroyo also incorporates architectural features that are not common in the Chaco Canyon area, so this ancient dwelling truly is an interesting study of its own.

Photographs do not always reflect the true proportions of an architectural site, especially when taken up close. There are few distant vantage points at Pueblo Del Arroyo for analyzing the overall picture, because the building is surrounded by rough dry wash ravines and protected ground. The foot trail quickly enters this pueblo complex, so a visitor will be plunged right into the thick of the matter and the focus will be up close and personal. This is a good thing, because hours can be spent studying the finer details of the master craftsmanship.

Pueblo Del Arroyo is a very complex structure that stood nearly four stories tall and had about 300 rooms. This great house also features 17 kivas and each has a remarkable design. This great house definitely is a feast for the eyes, especially if ancient archaeology is a pastime. When touring Pueblo Del Arroyo be sure to take your sweet time to take it all in, because the memories can be poondered over for a lifetime!
