Red Rock Park ~ Gallup, New Mexico

Red Rock Park is a local destination that is well worth checking out when touring old historic Route 66 in Gallup, New Mexico. This park is situated in the picturesque red rock cliffs adjacent to the city, yet because this unique landscape is so far removed from what can be called normal, it might as well be a million miles away. All it takes is one look to become mesmerized and recent memories of the modern world will magically fade away. Red Rock Park truly is a great escape and it is easy to see why this is such a popular weekend destination.

Red Rock Park features a large natural red rock amphitheater, which serves as a cultural events center. Everything from rodeos and concerts to annual tribal gatherings takes place in the Red Rock Amphitheater, so it pays to take a look at the events calendar when planning the trip. Barter and trade is a long standing tradition in the sovereign nations and plenty of local merchants market their artistic crafts in this area. A cultural museum and the old original Church Rock Post Office can be found here too, so visitors of all ages can learn a little something along the way.

Red Rock Park features two developed campgrounds with RV hook-ups, which makes it easy to set up a basecamp for adventures in this region. Stables are located on site, so horseback trail riders are in luck too. Red Rock Park features rock hounding areas and remote ghost towns, while exploring the remnants of old Route 66 all the way to the Continental Divide is an option too. There are several hiking trails to take on that include the paths to Church Rock and Pyramid Rock, which are picturesque landmarks that adorn the cover of many travel brochures. Red Rock Park certainly does have a lot to offer, so be sure to chalk this destination high on the list when touring Route 66 in western New Mexico!
