Uncompahgre Falls is located at the intersection of Highway 550 and the Engineer Pass 4x4 trail. This area is the last stop going north before entering the infamously dangerous narrow section of the Million Dollar Highway through Red Mountain Pass to the town of Ouray, Colorado. Both sides of the road are a 4x4 staging area, so there is ample room for parking. The very steep and deep gorge that the Uncompahgre River runs through is only a few steps away from the pavement and a tremendous roaring rapids waterfall can be viewed here. The whitewater is most powerful during the spring snow melt season and care must be taken to avoid danger when getting close to the river. The reward for checking out this lesser known roadside attraction is an exciting sight and sound experience like no other. For this reason, be sure to log this spot high on the list when planning a tour of the Million Dollar Highway!
