A trip to Wetherill Mesa is best done during the late spring season while the mountain flowers are blooming. This is because Wetherill Mesa is located in the remote back country of Mesa Verde National Park and the long drive through the wide open spaces is guaranteed to be slow going because of low speed limits. Basically, driving the lengthy paved road to Wetherill Mesa will be like taking a leisurely high elevation nature trail tour, so it best to go with the flow and stop to smell the wildflowers along the way! There are several scenic overlooks along the western edge of the mesa that tower over the valley way down below. Much of the Four Corners region can be seen from these scenic overlooks and the distant views west extend all the way to the mountains next to Bears Ears in Utah. There is plenty of nature viewing to be done too and when the spring season flowers are blooming, songbirds can be seen everywhere. The local Magpies are most commonly seen and because they are keenly aware of human activity, they can be some of the most difficult birds to photograph. Keeping a camera handy for the Wetherill Mesa tour is a good thing to do, because the majestic mountain top views are truly worthy of sharing back home!

Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *This website will be going through renovations soon. Separate destination articles will be combined after the videos replace the outdated photo gallery system. As many readers know, most of the writing was done on the fly while camping, so many articles read like a rough draft. The articles will be cleaned up and edited. Many of the old photos were straight out of the camera due camping limitations and the quality will be bumped up. Another goal is to make navigating the index pages easier and combining separate articles will help. This website will continue into the future and your patience is greatly appreciated!
