The Umatilla National Forest covers a lot of ground in northeast Oregon and the diverse terrain offers plenty for a visitor to explore. For those who wish to escape from the modern world, Highway 204 runs through the Umatilla National Forest from Weston to Elgin and there is a cozy little roadside campground about halfway in between. The Woodland Campground is the spot to look for and this a good place to set up a basecamp for adventures in the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness. This vast wilderness area has a deep woods mountainous terrain and spending some time here will definitely satisfy the call of the wild. Best of all, Highway 204 sees very little traffic and the same can be said about the Woodland Campground, so enjoying some peace and quiet is easy to do. The Woodland Campground only has six campsites that are best suited for tent or trailer camping and there are basic facilities. There is no drinking water onsite and there are no stores nearby, so stocking up prior to setting sail is best to do. There are several hiking trails in this area that go deep into the wilderness, which will satisfy nature lovers to no end. This is a prime time birding and wildlife viewing area, so be sure to pack a light camera lens combo for the long trails. Other than exploring the wilderness around the Woodland Campground, there is not much else on the entertainment venue during the summer season. There are two Umatilla National Forest winter sports parks nearby, but this campground is only open for summer. There are numerous National Forest Roads in this section of woods, so finding a unique dispersed campsite deeper in the forest can be done with a high ground clearance vehicle. The Oregon State Parks near La Grande, the Sumpter Valley and points of interest in southeast Washington are within a day's drive, so this is a nice jumping off point. Best of all, very few mainstream tourists explore this region and overcrowding is rarely be a problem.

New!
Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *The Destination West website upgrading project is well underway. Unique YouTube slideshows are replacing the outdated Flickr photo galleries. The new videos feature modern graphics and alternative music instrumentals that enhance the viewing experience. Some articles are being condensed, while others are getting much needed edits. As everybody knows, the bulk of the original articles and photos were published on the fly during the Covid camping venture and there were limitations. Upgrading is the way to go and more articles will receive a makeover each week until this project is completed. After that, I will be able to gather new material. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
